CCLH Constitution
Preamble:
The Canadian Committee on Labour History is open to anybody interested in studying and promoting all aspects of working-class and labour history. The Committee defines working-class and labour history in the broadest terms and encourages study of working-class communities, culture, ethnicity, family life, gender, sexuality, migration, ideology, politics and organization.
It recognizes the value of a diversity of disciplinary and theoretical approaches to the study of history and encourages open and active discussion and debate. As well, it aims to encourage the inclusion of working-class history in school curricula, through institutions of public history, and within the educational programs of labour and community organizations.
Article I: Name
The name of the organization is the Canadian Committee on Labour History (CCLH).
Article II: Purpose
The purpose of the organization shall be:
- To advance education by producing books and publications in the field of the Canadian working class and labour movement;
- To advance education by providing publicly available scholarships, bursaries, and other forms of financial assistance to the public to be used for undergraduate and graduate education;
- To undertake activities ancillary and incidental to the above-mentioned charitable purposes.
Article III: Associations
The CCLH is a sub-committee of the Canadian Historical Association.
Article IV: Membership
The membership includes all current, individual subscribers of the journal of the association: Labour/Le Travail. Those who support the goals of the CCLH but, for whatever reason, do not subscribe to Labour/Le Travail, may declare their membership at the Annual General Meeting of the CCLH.
Article V: Annual General Meeting
Final authority resides in the membership of the CCLH as exercised in the Annual General Meeting. This meeting is normally held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Canadian Historical Association. Under no circumstances can an Annual General Meeting be delayed beyond 18 months of the previous AGM. Between Annual General Meeting, authority is vested in the Executive Committee of the CCLH, which is elected by the Annual General Meetings.
Article VI: Executive Committee
The Executive Committee consists of the following officers.
President: The President must chair the Annual General Meeting, supervise and report on all activities of the CCLH, and represent the Committee publicly.
Vice-Presidents: Two Vice-Presidents shall assist the President in her/his duties and substitute for the President if she/he is unable to perform the duties of the presidency.
Secretary: The Secretary is responsible for maintaining the minutes of Committee. Said minutes shall be published in Labour/Le Travail.
Treasurer: The Treasurer is responsible for the finances of the Committee and shall report such to the Annual General Meeting.
Editor: The Editor is responsible for the journal, Labour/Le Travail.
Executive members of the CCLH are generally elected for a two-year term by the Annual General Meeting. After two years they may be re-elected for another one or two-year term, unless there are unusual circumstances and the extended term is approved by the AGM of the CCLH.
Article VII: Other Committees
Publications Committee: The Publications Committee is responsible for publications (other than Labour/Le Travail). This committee consists of at least three members elected by the Annual General Meeting or by the Executive Committee. It elects its own Chair, who is responsible for reporting activities to the CCLH Executive Committee.
Prize Committees: The Prize Committees will choose winners of prizes sponsored by the CCLH, such as the Eugene A. Forsey Prizes. Each committee will consist of at least three members, elected by the Annual General Meeting or by the Executive Committee. They will elect their own Chair, who is responsible for reporting activities to the CCLH Executive Committee.
Article VIII: Amendments
The By-Laws of the Committee may be amended by a two-thirds vote of those attending the Annual General Meeting.
